Foot Blisters

Preventing Blisters

You don’t have to live with blisters of the feet. In almost every situation, we are able to help patients eliminate blister formation completely.

Blisters are caused by either excessive friction and / or pressure. Our primary goal in preventing blisters is to determine what forces are causing your blisters and then reverse those forces. Treatments for preventing blisters may include:

  1. Powerstep Medical Grade SupportUse orthotics or arch supports to reduce excessive motion in order to reduce friction. The more the orthotic stops motion, the less likely you will be to get a blister. For over-the-counter arch supports we recommend the PowerStep Medical Grade Orthotic. To stop even more motion, see your podiatrist about a custom orthotic. If custom orthotics are used, they are designed specifically to eliminate the friction that causes the blisters.

  2. ostiderm roll onEvery morning, after drying your feet apply a foot antiperspirant and deodorant. We recommend Ostiderm Roll-on Deodorant and Antiperspirant for the Feet. Safeguard against foot odor and excessive foot perspiration with this antiperspirant - deodorant roll-on.

  3. smart knit x static sockAvoid cotton socks – cotton holds moisture next to your skin. Instead, wear socks that wick moisture away from your feet. The Smartknit X-static socks are the best we have found. These socks wick moisture away from your feet and are made with X-Static – a silver fiber. The silver is naturally anti-microbial and these seamless socks safely inhibit the growth of odor causing bacteria and fungi.

  4. Use Blister Pads over areas prone to blisters. These pads decrease friction and work better than standard treatments such as moleskin.

  5. ball ring shoe stretcherIf your shoes have “hot spots” causing blisters, stretch your shoes over that area. You can stretch them yourself with a ball and ring shoe stretcher.

  6. orthofeet-shoeFind a shoe store with well trained shoe fitters to fit your shoes. Our Shoe List has a list of those in the Seattle area. A good shoe fitter will not help you find the best shoes for your feet and also can modify the shoe to fit better over the Tailor’s bunion. If you don’t have a good shoe store nearby, these Orthofeet Shoes for Women and Orthofeet Shoes for Men  work great for Tailor’s bunions as they have extra room in the toe box and are easy to stretch. Both casual and athletic shoes are available.

Treating Blisters

If the blister has not "popped," leave it alone. Most of the time, the blister will reabsorb and heal on its own

If it is painful, the blister can be drained, but leave the roof of the blister in place. Wear a bandage over the blister.

If you have any concerns, call for an appointment in our Seattle office.

Be sure to bring in a selection of shoes that you commonly wear. – Especially if you have developed blisters while wearing them.

Healthy feet allow for regular exercise and a healthier lifestyle. If you have a blistering problem not relieved by the suggestions above, make an appointment to see us in our Seattle office. We can provide you with conservative treatment options that will relieve your pain.
