Foot Blisters

Preventing Blisters

You don’t have to live with blisters of the feet. In almost every situation, we are able to help patients eliminate blister formation completely.

Blisters are caused by either excessive friction and / or pressure. Our primary goal in preventing blisters is to determine what forces are causing your blisters and then reverse those forces. Treatments for preventing blisters may include:

  • The use of orthotics or arch supports to reduce abnormal motion. If custom orthotics are used, they are designed specifically to eliminate the forces that cause the blisters.
  • Topical medications to decrease excessive moisture that leads to increased friction
  • Recommendations on specific socks to decrease friction
  • Evaluating shoes for proper fit and recommending specific shoes.

Be sure to bring in a selection of shoes that you commonly wear. – Especially if you have developed blisters while wearing them.

Treating Blisters

If the blister has not "popped," leave it alone. Most of the time, the blister will reabsorb and heal on its own

If it is painful, the blister can be drained, but leave the roof of the blister in place. Wear a bandage over the blister.

If you have any concerns, call for an appointment in our Seattle office.

Healthy feet allow for regular exercise and a healthier lifestyle. If you have a blistering problem not relieved by the suggestions above, make an appointment to see us in our Seattle office. We can provide you with conservative treatment options that will relieve your pain.
