Best Shoes for Top of Foot Pain

Top of foot pain can occur with many different foot problems. One of the most common—dorsal compression syndrome— is characterized by swelling and pain on the top of the forefoot. This tends to happen when the arches flatten too much, leading to the bone compression on the top of the foot.

The best shoes and solutions for reducing top of foot pain are the following:

Stable Shoes. The foot should be supported in a stable shoe to keep from flattening.  Shoes should have a firm heel and torisional stability. This prevents the heels from rolling inward and the foot from flattening too much, which leads to bones compression. The Orthofeet Shoes for Women and Orthofeet Shoes for Men are some of our favorites.

Use a Firm Arch Support. The insole of the shoe should be removed and replaced with a custom or prefabricated arch support, such as the Powerstep Full Length Arch Support. It is the best over-the-counter orthotic, as it has high arches and is semi-rigid to decrease painful motion.

Buy Deeper Than Average Shoes. Shoe depth makes a difference because it puts less pressure on the top of the foot. The Orthofeet Shoes for Women and Orthofeet Shoes for Men are made to be deeper, but still look good.

Try Custom Orthotics. A custom orthotic that conforms very closely to the top of the foot is another way to reduce top of foot pain. Total Contact Orthotics are prescribed by a podiatrist and fit extremely close to the arches.
