Aching and swollen feet are almost inevitable during pregnancy. Most foot pain associated with pregnancy, however, is easily treated and/or prevented.
It’s no wonder feet hurt during pregnancy. Increased weight, changes in gait and loosening of ligaments common during pregnancy all contribute to increased force on the feet.
One of the most common foot conditions brought on by pregnancy is over-pronation, or a weakening of the arches commonly known as flat feet. Over-pronation can make walking painful and increase strain on the calves, knees, hip and/or back.
If the flattening of the feet is left untreated, painful disorders such
as Metatarsalgia (ball of foot
pain) and Plantar Fasciitis,
can result. The condition can be avoided or treated, however, by arch supports and stable shoes.
You can see our recommendations here. If you are not wearing shoes wear sandals or slippers that offer exceptional arch support.
To avoid foot pain, never go barefoot while you are pregnant.
Another common foot condition brought on by pregnancy is edema, or
swelling, caused by pressure from the uterus that leads to hampered
circulation. Edema generally occurs later in pregnancy and is considered
normal unless accompanied by swelling of the face or hands. Below you will find our recommendations to prevent and treat edema.

Around the house use slippers with arch support. Again, the
Orthaheel slippers offer the best support we have seen in slippers.
Wear seamless
socks that do not constrict circulation, such as those from
Smoothtoe.
