Home Treatment Hints for Turf Toe

Our goal for treating turf toe and relieving pain in our patients is to

  1. Transfer force off of the big toe joint
  2. Limit motion of the big toe joint

If you cannot see a podiatrist, or you want to try home treatment first, here are our suggestions on self treatment of turf toe. If you do not have 100% relief within 3 weeks of following all of the instructions below, see a podiatrist.
For best results in achieving relief of turf toe pain, we recommend that you use the following three products.

  • Use an arch support to transfer pressure off of the big toe joint. An arch support that will not collapse will do the best job. We recommend the Powerstep Medical Grade Orthotic.

  • Use a Turf Toe Plate to limit motion of the big toe joint. These steel inserts go into your shoe, under the arch support. They act to limit motion of the injured joint.

  • Use a sandal with an arch support to wear around the house. This will act to decrease pressure on the ball of your foot. We highly recommend the Wave Flip-flop Sandal – available here. Our patients love this flip flop.
